Brands we love from MADESOUTH Hoover, Alabama

Hope Voelkel

My booth at MadeSouth was right next to The Alabama Sweet Tea Co. For a day and a half I watched lines of people buy a 24 oz jar of tea—and come back for refills! When I gave in and bought my own jar, I was sure I wouldn't finish it myself. I was also sure that I wouldn't take advantage of the $2 refill.

Dead wrong. That tea was so good. I finished the jar by myself and the refill.

From that tea to men's dress shirts to BBQ sauce to candles to honey, MadeSouth was a great place to encounter brands committed to US production and manufacturing (something you know we care about, too).

Here's a little round-up of some of our faves.

Redland Cotton

A-mazing feeling sheets, pillowcases and textiles. The cotton used in making these lovelies is grown and processed here, too.

I was continually drawn to these state prints. Once I heard the backstory, I knew why. From their maker: "I took a particular interest in state foodways, which studies how food intersects with history and culture, because no matter where you call home, food is a sweet (and savory) reminder of the kinship and traditions you share with others, both family and neighbors."

I watched a toddler toting her recently-purchased chair then plop it in front of my booth and sit down—proud and obviously enjoying the people-watching. I love the adjustable design here (and so did that toddler).

Even if the artisan behind Garner Blue has been hand-dying indigo textiles sine 2013 and has a very cool array of pillows, scarves, wraps and more that showcase her designs.

I hate a wimpy dish towel, you know the kind that get soaked quickly? I loved the block-print design of these before I knew they were made from absorbent, quick-drying, 100% US cotton.
