The jeans that started this whole thing were a second-hand pair I bought after my daughter was born. All through my babe's first (sweltering) summer, numerous visits to Virginia wineries, my return to work, birthday parties, Thanksgiving, Christmas, a trip to Nicaragua (dumb idea, it was brutally hot), a residency at a writer's colony, my sister's wedding, date nights, girls' nights .....two years and a few threadbare holes later, those jeans had become so much more than their cotton/spandex blend.
They (quite literally) held me up in brand new life moments. They were the go-to outfit base when I’d run out of time to think about an alternative but had to wear something. Their now unwearability was it’s own kind of loss. They’d become a companion I depended on, and throwing them out felt wrong.
You know that feeling?
